Spring v. Fall: When is the Best Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs?

In our area, we see planting spring, summer, and fall. But people often ask me when is the best time to plant new trees. My answer takes into account a couple of variables.

Planting in the spring gives your new trees or shrubs the entire growing season to adjust to the shock of re-planting and develop a stronger root system that will help ensure their survival through the winter. However, it takes a lot of sugar and water for the tree/shrub to expand its roots. It will also need sugar and water to produce and sustain leaves. So I take this into consideration when discussing deciduous versus evergreens.

In early fall as the deciduous tree is shedding its leaves, more nutrients can be dedicated to root growth. But I recommend a good layer go mulch about the base to keep the roots protected into the colder months.

You can have a successful installation many times throughout the year. Just keep in mind that your new planting will need lots of water fete first several weeks, and it doesn’t hurt to supplement routine watering for the first year. And don’t forget to mulch!
